Uncommon Favor
Uncommon Favor
Andrea L. Brooks
“This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope. Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:21-23 NKJV
Uncommon favor, extraordinary blessings, unbelievable endowments, unimaginable gifts, unmerited and undeserved mercy!
As I sat down, pondering my next steps, I realized I had no job and no income. I kept thinking to myself, "I have no this, I have no that." But then, the scripture I recalled rose up within me: “This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope!” I needed to remind myself not to focus on what I couldn’t see in front of me but on what my mind could remember to uplift my spirit and motivate me to believe.
So, I picked up my pen and paper to write. However, I had to immediately rip it up and start all over because the language I used was wrong. Our words hold power. There was no room for self-pity in this situation. I had to remember that it is Yahweh—who has been, who is, and who will be—my redeemer, my provider, my resource, my hope, my salvation, my joy, my strength, my laughter, my light, my everything. Even in this moment, I can recall to my mind that “therefore I have hope.” It is because of His mercies that I am not consumed; His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is His faithfulness!
As I continued to write and thank Him, starting from my earliest memories, my soul became happy. My strength was renewed. Tears filled the pages as my pen moved faster, and more pages kept piling up. I began to remember moments I had forgotten about Jehovah Jireh, the provider who showed up when I least expected it. I recalled Abba, who was there for me when I felt fatherless. I reflected on how I had enjoyed His uncommon favor throughout my life, even when I didn’t realize it. I remembered Jehovah Gabor, who defended and fought for me when I felt alone and needed a warrior. No matter what, Elohim was always there. I can confidently say that I've had His uncommon favor my entire life, even when I didn't recognize it.
In this season, when I don’t know what my next move should be and am uncertain about the future, I choose to trust in the uncommon favor of God that rests upon me. He always keeps His promises—He always has. As Psalm 145:13 assures, “The Lord is trustworthy in all He promises and faithful in all that He does.” Therefore, I expect the trustworthy God to continue being faithful with His promises and to show me His uncommon favor!
